"What impressed me about Hedewig's 2003 Stabat Mater was how her witty contemporary choreography hinted at the imagery of Pergolesi's great religious composition in ways so oblique as to be almost hidden. In Menagerie, her references are more forthright but even more elegant...."
— Deborah Jowitt, Village Voice

Choreography: Guta Hedewig
Danced by: Theresa Duhon, Guta Hedewig, Rachel Lynch-John, Kristi Spessard
Video installation: Anja Hitzenberger
Original music: Edward Ratliff, performed live by string trio plus one
Costumes: Reiko Kawashima with Reiko Tomita
Set Design: Illya Azaroff
Lighting Design: Kathy Kaufmann
Description: Guta Hedewig Dance returned to Danspace with Menagerie, an evening-length multi-media piece that dives deep into the world of creatures and their quirky codes of behavior and casts an observant and irreverent human gaze into animal lives where instinct and internal logic reign supreme. Menagerie ventures into the buzzing, well-organized dances of tail-wagging bees, the leisurely lounging of larger mammals, the precise coordination that guides migrating flocks, and the mysterious symbiosis of crocodiles and Egyptian plover birds. Drama and hilarity emerge from a deadpan bipedal perspective.
Premiered: December 9, 2004 at Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery in New York City
